SMU is up to 16-0 this season after its 79-55 road win against 8-9 East Carolina on Wednesday night.
The Mustangs — who are not eligible to play in the postseason this year due to NCAA sanctions — are ironically off to their best start in school history. Tuesday’s victory came with five players scoring in double figures. Ben Moore led all scorers with 17 points. He also had six rebounds and four steals. His teammate, Jordan Tolbert, went for 15 points and eight boards. Larry Brown’s team shot 53 percent from the field and was 11 for 22 from 3-point range.
Craziest stat? How about 11 total fouls from the visiting team. East Carolina only committed 13 of its own. Few games this season have featured as few fouls as this one. For SMU to keep presenting different ways of scoring and different guys being capable of having huge games, well it makes this year all the more bittersweet for that program and its fans.
ECU, which hasn’t reached the NCAA Tournament since 1993 and has just two Big Dance trips to its name, is ranked 172nd at KenPom.com and is now 0-4 in the American.
SMU’s undefeated quest continues this weekend with a road game against 8-10 Tulane.
