Jimmy Garoppolo is expected to get plenty of playing time on Thursday night as the New England Patriots play host to the Green Bay Packers as consensus home favorites on the NFL betting lines in their Week 1 preseason contest.
Online sportsbook 5Dimes has the Patriots set as 3-point favorites for Thursday’s matchup at Gillette Stadium, with New England looking to get Garoppolo in sync with the offense in preparation for the start of the regular season.
And that of course is because Tom Brady has been handed a four-game suspension by the league to start the season as a result of last year’s Deflategate scandal. Brady and the NFLPA are still trying to get the suspension squashed by the courts or at least get an injunction in place before the season opener.
But for now Garoppolo is the likely starter for New England when they open the regular season. Brady’s backup completed 19 of his 27 pass attempts for 182 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions for the Patriots in his limited playing time last season.
Newly-signed third-string quarterback Ryan Lindley should see some action behind Garoppolo against the Packers on Thursday, while it’s expected that Brady will not play more than just a few snaps in the contest.
The quarterback situation for the Packers is decidedly more settled, with Aaron Rodgers fully recovered from the calf injury he suffered at the end of last season. Scott Tolzien is the Packers’ backup quarterback for 2015, with Matt Blanchard the third-string option.
And Rodgers is the +500 favorite on the odds to win the NFL MVP award again this season at Bodog, with Andrew Luck of the Colts his closest competitor on the list at +700. Brady is back at +2000 odds on that NFL season prop at the sportsbook.
Bodog also has Green Bay sitting as the +600 co-favorite (along with the Seattle Seahawks) on the odds to win Super Bowl 50, and at +300 to win the NFC Championship. New England is at +900 to win the Super Bowl and at +400 to win the AFC Championship.
Green Bay and New England last met in November 2014, with the Packers winning 26-21 as a 1.5-point home favorite on the NFL odds in that UNDER result. The Patriots last faced the Packers in the preseason in 2005, winning 27-3 as a 3.5-point road favorite that day according to the NFL Database.
