RBC Heritage Odds & Betting Preview

While the golfing world is still trying to catch its collective breath after an exhilarating finish at the 2017 edition of the Masters Tournament, the PGA Tour shifts its focus to Harbour Town Golf Links in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina for the RBC Heritage.

As is tradition with its proximity to the Masters, many of the top players on the Tour won’t be in attendance this weekend. That doesn’t mean there will be a shortage of excitement, though.

With the playing field relatively even across the board, Matt Kuchar is the +1400 favorite at Bovada with Brandt Snedeker (+2000), Russell Henley (+2200), Tyrrell Hatton (+2500), Bill Haas (+2500), Branden Grace (+2500), Kevin Kisner (+2500), Martin Kaymer (+2800), Charley Hoffman (+2800) and Matthew Fitzpatrick (+2800) rounding out the top 10.

It’s no surprise to see Kuchar as the front-runner after his electrifying performance at Augusta National. Kuchar, who finished the event in a tie for fourth place at 5 under par, carded six birdies and a hole-in-one on the way to a 67 in the final round — tied for the lowest of the day. Ever the nice guy, Kuchar even signed the hole-in-one ball and gave it to a young fan in attendance. It wouldn’t be surprising at all to see Kuch parlay that momentum and go low once again at the RBC Heritage, an event he won in 2014.

Grace is back to defend his first title on U.S. soil and he’ll battle it out with eight of the top 30 in the world rankings. Excluding the Masters, the lineup includes four of the past five PGA Tour winners with Adam Hadwin (Valspar Championship), Marc Leishman (Arnold Palmer Invitational), D.A. Points (Puerto Rico Open) and Henley (Shell Houston Open) teeing it up. Grace overcame a three-shot deficit on the final day to shoot a 5-under-par 66, edging runner-up Luke Donald in the process.

Past trends are key to predicting a winner at this tournament. Since the Heritage took the post-Masters slot in 1983, only six men have gone on to win without spending the prior week at Augusta National. The last golfer to accomplish the feat was Carl Pettersson in 2012.

The course features one of the shortest layouts on the schedule, with narrow fairways and relatively small greens presenting a challenge. Accuracy is more important off the tee than distance, and a good approach/short game will be crucial for success here.
