Returning players and top recruiting class has Duke the fave in 2017

USA TODAY Sports

The confetti on Villanova’s incredible national title victory has barely settled, but that doesn’t mean sportsbooks aren’t already looking towards next season.

Just one day removed from Villanova being crowned champion, the Westgate LV Superbook released their college basketball national championship odds for next year and it is the Duke Blue Devils who open as the favorites.

Duke opens at 9/2 ahead of the perpetually rebuilding John Calipari and Kentucky at 6/1 and the defending champion Wildcats at 8/1. Louisville, who should be postseason bound this year barring no more sanctions, and Kansas round out the top five on the board at 10/1.

The Blue Devils got a boost with Grayson Allen deciding to return for his junior season and bring back a core of Amile Jefferson and Luke Kennard. Throw in the top-rated recruiting class, including No. 1 overall, big man Harry Giles and the No. 1 small forward in Jayson Tatum and it’s easy to see why Las Vegas has them listed as the favorite.

While Kentucky losses their tremendous backcourt duo of Jamal Murray and Tyler Ulis to the NBA, Calipari brings in yet another excellent class of freshmen including the No. 2 power forward Bam Adebay, the No. 2 point guard De’Aron Fox and the No. 1 shooting guard Malik Monk. Kentucky just doing Kentucky things.

Meanwhile, defending champion Villanova has the look of a team full of seniors, but in reality they are just losing Ryan Arcidiacono and Daniel Ochefu. We don’t mean “just” as they were both huge impact players for ‘Nova, but they will be returning a solid core, especially if potential player-of-the-year candidate Josh Hart and hero Kris Jenkins return. Both have said they will at least declare themselves for the NBA Draft evaluation process. A new rule allows college players to do so without losing eligibility to return to school as long as they don’t hire an agent.
