Rhode Island junior E.C. Matthews suffered a torn ACL in the Rams’ season-opener against American on Friday night.
An MRI on Saturday confirmed the injury.
“I plan on using this setback as an opportunity to continue to grow as a student, a leader, and a man,” Matthews said. “I will be at every study hall, every practice, every film session, every game — no different than before.”
Matthews suffered the torn ACL in the first half of an eventual 65-42 victory after planting his right leg while driving into the lane. He had to be carried off of the court.
A 6-foot-5 guard, Matthews averaged 16.9 points and 4.6 rebounds last season while leading URI to 23 victories and the NIT. The Detroit native was voted first-team All-Atlantic 10 this preseason. He’s expected to apply for and get a medical redshirt.
