The sports world was shocked last night when MMA’s most dominant fighter, Ronda Rousey, was dethroned by Holly Holm. Not only did Holm do the unthinkable by beating the previously undefeated Rousey, but she delivered one of the most one sided beatdowns in recent history. Rousey’s aggressive style backfired which allowed Holm to completely pick her apart for six minutes.
Holm closed as a +700 underdog for the fight, but that number was much higher leading up to the fight. Fight fans are right to assume that an immediate rematch will take place, likely at UFC 200 this summer, but after getting totally owned by Holm, should Rousey enter the rematch as an underdog? Oddsmakers certainly don’t think so, as Rousey is listed as a -255 favorite at BetOnline for the potential rematch, with Holm at +215.
After the fact, many “experts” and uneducated fans will tell you that they saw the Rousey defeat coming, but the truth is, there was no reason to. Coming into the fight, Rousey completely decimated her competition, finishing 12 straight opponents with only one of those fights going beyond the first round. Holm, meanwhile, was coming off of two uninspiring decision wins in the Octagon and many even questioned the UFC’s decision to put her in the fight.
Holm will have many more backers going into the rematch, and rightfully so. Don’t forget, an underdog in MMA always has a puncher’s chance, especially when that underdog is a former professional boxing champion with 18 title defenses in three weight classes.
