Stony Brook coach Steve Pikiell has reached an agreement in principle to become Rutgers’ next men’s basketball coach, a source confirmed to CBS Sports on Saturday.
A formal announcement is expected soon.
Pikiell, 48, is a former Connecticut player and assistant who has spent the past 11 years at Stony Brook, where he won four of the past seven America East regular-season titles and guided the Seawolves to the 2016 NCAA Tournament. Their season ended Thursday with a loss to John Calipari’s Kentucky Wildcats in the Round of 64.
Pikiell replaces Eddie Jordan at Rutgers.
Jordan was fired earlier this month after three seasons.
Rutgers’ primary target was Rhode Island coach Dan Hurley, a New Jersey native. But Hurley turned Rutgers down earlier this week to remain with the Rams.
The Pikiell-to-Rutgers news seemed to catch Stony Brook star Jameel Warney by surprise.
