Israel is his true first name. He didn’t want to divulge his last name, but on his baseball cap was the aforementioned moniker, “El Loco Is” – literally, Crazy Is.
He walks with a huge cane topped with a skull. He has a troll monkey attached to his shirt, and a fuzzy blue Tribble, which he tells me is a “Star Trek” character (Point of fact: I can’t say I’ve ever boldly gone where no man has gone before – which in this case is sitting in front of a TV watching “Star Trek.”)
Israel is wearing a Tom Brady New England Patriots jersey, leading me to the completely erroneous assumption that he’s a Patriots fan.
“I’m not a Patriots fan, but I like cheaters,” he proclaimed. “Tom Brady is a cheater, that’s why I like him now. But I hate the Patriots.”
Israel is hoping to soak up information to utilize as he prepares for another run in the SuperContest, which he’s entered the past 15 years.
“I’ve never cashed, but I’ve been close a few times,” he said.
So is that why he has all these intriguing charms – the skull cane, the monkey, the tribble? Well, no. They aren’t for good luck at all, Israel claims.
“They’re not for me. They need me. I don’t need them,” he said.
Well, that clears that up. And there’s plenty more like Israel. Just head into any sportsbook this football season, and you’re sure to see someone or something unusual.
