Former Mississippi State coach Rick Ray has reached an agreement in principle to become the next head coach at Southeast Missouri State, a source told CBSSports.com on Monday.

A formal announcement is expected soon.

Ray spent the past three seasons at Mississippi State, where he inherited a total rebuilding project that he improved, on some level, in every season before being fired last month so that the school could hire Ben Howland. The 44-year-old was previously an assistant at Indiana State, Northern Illinois, Purdue and Clemson. He’s replacing Dickey Nutt.
