With Texas athletic director Steve Patterson reportedly visiting Shaka Smart on Thursday to discuss the Longhorns’ head coaching job, the Richmond community is doing all it can to convince the 37-year old coach to stay put.
According to CBS Sports’ Gary Parrish, Texas officials are “optimistic” that Smart will accept the job.
VCU students, hoping to change Smart’s mind with school spirit, are taking action with a pep rally on Thursday night at the Siegel Center.
“We have a limited amount of time to show Coach Smart how much he means to the city of Richmond, and this is our chance to have an impact on his final decision,” Ram Nation, the group responsible for organizing the rally, wrote on their website.
Shaka has a BIG HEART. Join us at the Stu today at 5:30 PM to show him how much he is loved.

While the pep rally doesn’t start until the late afternoon, students have been gathering around the Siegel Center since the morning.

But that’s not all. Richmond’s strip clubs made an offer to Smart, and his staff, should the VCU coach decide to turn down the opportunity and stay with the Rams.
