Shell Houston Open Odds & Betting Preview

[ad_1]

The last stop on the PGA Tour before the biggest tournament of the year takes place this weekend when the golfing world shifts its sights to the Lone Star State for the Shell Houston Open. The field for this year’s tournament is especially strong, as many players will be looking for a final tune-up before the Masters Tournament.

Unsurprisingly, the streaking Dustin Johnson is the +500 favorite to garner the hardware. Jordan Spieth (+800), Jon Rahm (+1200), Henrik Stenson (+1600), Rickie Fowler (+1800), Justin Rose (+2200), Adam Scott (+2500), Phil Mickelson (+2500), J.B. Holmes (+3300) and Dan Berger (+4000).

Normally the Houston Open is overlooked in terms of drawing star power, but five of the top 10 golfers in the world rankings will tee it up in H-Town. Fresh off a triumph at the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play – his third win in as many starts – Johnson is on an absolute roll right now. DJ has played well at the Golf Club of Houston, collecting two top-5 finishes in his past three visits to the course.

Jim Herman isn’t exactly a household name, but he did earn his first career PGA Tour victory at this event a year ago. Herman has played some solid golf since then, and he’s a ridiculous +10000 to do it again. It’s a long shot, but there are certainly worse options out there.

This is a venue that’s traditionally rewarded big hitters, so backing a golfer who’s perennially solid off the tee is a good idea. Big bombers Adam Scott, Paul Casey, Anthony Kim and Phil Mickelson won four of the last seven championships.

The fairways are wide with much less rough compared to other courses on the Tour, and water is in play on half the holes. The greens are larger than average but they’ll be playing fast in an attempt to stimulate the conditions at Augusta National.
