A few hours after NC State announced its contract extension coach Mark Gottfried, the Wolfpack opened the season with a staggering 17-point home loss to William & Mary .
NC State fell 85-68 to the Tribe, giving Gottfried his first loss in a season-opener since he was coaching at Alabama in 2008.
Goes without saying, but we’ll say it anyway: This is a pretty huge loss to start the year. It is the kind of loss that will cost NC State a seed line, if not two, depending on how things shake out along the way.
Remember, this team reached the Sweet 16 last season as a No. 8 seed. The Wolfpack were considered to be one of the five or six best teams in the ACC coming into the season. And hey, they still might be. But on a night when a few teams took on some bad losses, this could be the worst of the bunch. William & Mary isn’t a bad CAA squad this season, not in any way, but to lose by so many points against a school that will almost surely need an auto bid to reach the NCAAs? This is something that will get Wolfpack fans anxious right off the bat.
Tribe junior Daniel Dixon had 19 points. Caleb Martin put up a game-high 21 for NC State.
No time for the Wolfpack to sit and sob, because the team has a home game against South Alabama on Sunday.
