Here’s the situation: Your team has a big game against an NCAA Tournament team, then a tricky one on the road to close out its regular season.
You need both wins in order to keep pace in the always-slippery bubble chase.
So you win both games, and in one of them, put up 47 points on 79 percent shooting to give your team its biggest victory of the season.
That’s how you do it if you’re St. Bonaventure senior Marcus Posley. That’s how you lock up Player of the Week. Bona went 2-0 against St. Joseph’s and Saint Louis last week, improving to 22-7 and sharing a tie of the regular-season league title in the Atlantic 10 with a 14-4 record. Posley averaged 32.5 points, 2.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 1.5 steals and shot a ridiculous 69 percent from the field. He was 8 for 11 from 3 in those two games!
Honestly, considering the circumstances surrounding the importance of the Saint Joe’s game, I think Posley’s performance is one of the most impressive in the past five years in college basketball. His team needed that win and he went out and put up 47. Crucial.
Just big-time stuff for Mark Schmidt’s team, which will be dangerous in the A-10 tournament, and the NCAA Tournament, thanks to Posley and a stud of a sophomore guard in Jaylen Adams. SBU has been off the radar most of this season, but it’s lost once since Jan. 24. Bona has a terrific offense, and watching Adams and Posley do their thing is a treat. You’ll want to see this team this week and in the Big Dance, should it receive a bid, which is looking likely — and will be a lock — if the Bonnies win one A-10 tourney game.
Bona gets the UMass-Rhode Island winner. Its tournament game will be the last tip at Barclays Center on Thursday night.
