OK, so it wasn’t a 5-0 sweep, but it was an improvement on the Week 1 record of 2-3.
With a 3-2 week, the OddsShark.com Super Computer is .500 in its weekly Westgate Super Contest picks for 2015. So progress dictates that a 4-1 week or better is right around the corner.
We tweaked the process for selecting which five games make the Westgate grade for Week 3, so without further delay, here are the predictions.
panthers -3 at home to Saints
Computer says 25.3 to 22.2 Panthers | Matchup Stats
The Panthers dominated the Saints the last time they played with quarterback Cam Newton throwing for three touchdowns and rushing for one. Added to that, Drew Brees’ status for the game is still up in the air after suffering a rotator cuff injury last week.
The Saints have only won three games as road underdogs in the past three seasons and the Panthers appear to be better on the turf than on paper. The computer gives a razor-thin edge for the cover here. If you are betting totals, there are UNDER trends galore, including six straight when Carolina is at home in divisional games.
cardinals –6.5 at home to Niners
Computer says 29.1 to 20.3 Cardinals | Matchup Stats
Through the first two weeks of the season the Cardinals have easily outscored any other team with 11 points more than second place in league scoring. The Cards are also facing a 49ers team who has yet to sort themselves out and saw their defence get decimated for 43 points in Week 2.
The Cardinals are 7-1 SU and ATS in their last eight games at home and have won seven of eight SU as home chalk. The 49ers have looked surprisingly good, then surprisingly bad through two weeks. The computer says this pick is solid up to -8.5 and the line is -6.5.
Ravens -2.5 at home to Bengals
Computer says 25 to 21.7 Ravens | Matchup Stats
The Ravens have not looked fantastic this year, but they have their home opener against a hated division rival. The talk of Ravens’ quarterback Joe Flacco’s demise may be premature as he posted a 98.4 QBR at home last season with 14 touchdowns and three interception.
A lot of people like the Bengals. I personally like the Bengals. The computer likes the Ravens. The Ravens franchise (including its Cleveland ancestry) has not started 0-3 since 1984 and they are 34-4 SU as home chalk since 2010.
Steelers +1.5 at Rams
Computer says 27 to 26.1 Rams | Matchup Stats
Coming off a 43-point performance and adding superstar running back Le’Veon Bell to the lineup after serving his two-game suspension will give the Steelers a major boost this week in St.Louis.
In their last eight games against the NFC West the Steelers have fared well, going 7-1 SU and 6-2 ATS, while the Rams are 0-4 SU in their last four home games against the AFC North.
Bills +3 at dolphins
Computer says 21.9 to 19.1 Dolphins | Matchup Stats
The Bills and Dolphins both boast strong defenses but it’s the offence that will be the story in Week 3’s matchup, and Buffalo has the early edge there.
These aren’t the same old Bills — this is a team that’s hungry to prove it’s finally a force to be reckoned with in the AFC East, meaning another early contest against a divisional foe could be exactly what the doctor ordered to start their season off on the right foot.
For trends seekers, the Bills are 6-2 ATS in their last eight games, while the Dolphins are 1-6 ATS in their last seven games.
