When it was announced on Friday that New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees would miss Sunday’s game due to a bruised rotator cuff, a record number of contestants jumped on their opponent the Carolina Panthers in Week 3 of the 2015 SuperContest at the Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook.
Out of the 1,727 entries, 713 (41 percent) picked the Panthers as 4.5-point home favorites to break the previous mark of 685 set by the Arizona Cardinals in Week 9 of last season. The Cardinals were 3.5-point road underdogs against the Dallas Cowboys and won 28-17 with Tony Romo out.
Keep in mind, SuperContest lines are released every Wednesday and do not change regardless of any injuries or weather that could affect the NFL games later in the week.
Contestants Jump on the Chalk Panthers
The consensus NFL odds at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark have Carolina listed as 8-point chalk, which gave contestants an excellent opportunity to take advantage of a stale contest line prior to the 11 a.m. (Pacific time) deadline on Saturday.
However, the Panthers are not the most popular pick by members of Team OddsShark in Week 3 even though they were selected by two of the three group co-leaders in David Fucillo and Ryan Fowler.
Instead, the Indianapolis Colts (-3) were the top group pick, taken 11 times compared to nine for Carolina as they visit the Tennessee Titans.
Nick Kostos is one Team OddsShark member who is not buying the hype on the Panthers as a top pick based solely on the absence of Brees. Kostos said there were simply better sides to choose from that he liked more on the Week 3 SuperContest card.
“I was more confident in my other picks,” Kostos said. “I don’t trust Carolina yet and think New Orleans will come out hot playing for its season – even without Brees.”
Colts Also Popular Pick for Contest Week 3
Indianapolis was the second-most popular consensus NFL play overall by the entire field, picked 637 times (37 percent) followed by the Buffalo Bills (440), Pittsburgh Steelers (439) and Baltimore Ravens (428).
The Bills are 3-point road underdogs visiting the Miami Dolphins while the Steelers are 1.5-road favorites against the St. Louis Rams and the Ravens are 2.5-point home chalk facing the Cincinnati Bengals.
