If you’re looking for a stat of the week, I think I’ve got one. Ready?
The St. Louis Cardinals are coming off a six-game winning streak.
Amazing, huh? Well, it is when you consider these guys have never done it on a trip of at least six games before.
That’s in 126 seasons.
“It’s hard to believe — for 125 years,” manager Mike Matheny told reporters after Wednesday’s 7-5 win over the Marlins to end the trip. “There’s been some great teams that have been through here. That’s an impressive statement.”
Indeed. It actually makes nine straight road victories for the Cards after a sweep of the Brewers in late April.
The betting numbers are impressive too. St. Louis earned a profit of $603.24 during the six most recent wins if you’re betting $100 per game, which makes for a win of $891.98 during the entire nine-game win streak. Unfortunately for us, they don’t travel again until May 21 when they visit the Dodgers.
The Cards are also 16-5 in their last 21 games after a horrible 3-9 start to the season. The winning tear has vaulted them to tops in the NL Central but none of this is the most interesting part for bettors.
What is exciting is the OVER is 15-3 in the last 18 St. Louis games. That’s like printing money if you were smart enough to jump on this one early.
The reason why it’s happening is primarily hitting. The Cardinals hit a pathetic .212 during those first 12 games but they’re batting almost .290 since then. St. Louis averaged 7.1 runs during the record-breaking road trip and 5.6 runs during the 18-game OVER stretch.
Totals in their games are on the rise a little but not enough to contend with the double-digit combined runs that Cardinals games are seeing lately.
It’s something to keep an eye on in Cards games during their upcoming stretch at home that begins on Friday when the Chicago Cubs come to town.
