Triple Crown odds reopen: longshot for 2015 winner

Horse racing’s Triple Crown appears to be getting more difficult to achieve and the odds posted this week show it will be a long shot bet again in 2015.

Online racebooks such as Bodog had the prospect of a Triple Crown winner in 2015 pegged at +600 (6-1 odds) as of Wednesday Jan. 7. The ‘no’ bet is a -1000 proposition , meaning you need to wager $100 just to turn a small $10 profit.

As the Kentucky Derby Trail gets set to kick off, which starts all of the Triple Crown discussion, American Pharoah and Dortmund were listed as the current favorite to win the first part of the three-race title.

Both were 10-1, slightly ahead of Texas Red at 12-1, according to Bodog.

Carpe Diem, El Kabeir and Daredevil were all listed at 16-1 odds.

No horse has won the Triple Crown since Affirmed pulled it off in 1978. Since then, many have come close, including last year when California Chrome won the first two races.

But as has been the case many times, a fresher horse hits the Belmont and upsets the favored horses. Last year, that horse was Tonalist.
