UAB coach Jerod Haase has spoken with Stanford officials and is considered among the leading candidates to be the next coach of the Cardinal, a source told CBS Sports.
Haase has been UAB’s head coach for four seasons.
He’s won 20 games each of the past two seasons. UAB won C-USA this season.
Haase, 41, is a California native who was raised only 200 miles from Stanford’s campus. Before UAB, he was an assistant for Roy Williams at both Kansas and North Carolina.
Stanford fired Johnny Dawkins last week after eight seasons.
Dawkins subsequently took the UCF job.
Meantime, multiple sources told CBS Sports there’s a push among some Stanford people to pass on Haase, hire former Stanford star Brevin Knight and surround him with a staff of former head coaches — specifically ex-Stanford player and assistant Eric Reveno and, perhaps, ex-Stanford coach Trent Johnson. Reveno and Johnson have both been head coaches for years. Reveno spent 10 seasons at Portland before being removed earlier this month. Johnson was just removed as TCU’s head coach last week.
Knight is currently a broadcaster with the Memphis Grizzlies.
