Upstart Panthers starting to gain respect in Cup odds

USA TODAY Sports

If someone told you at the start of the season the Florida Panthers would be one NHL’s top teams you’d probably do a double-take.

But that’s exactly what they are.

The Panthers lead the Atlantic Division with 70 points through 54 games (that is the fourth most points in the NHL), six points ahead of the Detroit Red Wings and the second most points in the Eastern Conference, trailing just the Washington Capitals.

And while the Panthers have seen a pretty significant boost in their Stanley Cup odds thanks to the impressive run, there are still several Eastern Conference teams with better odds to hoist the Cup at season’s end.

The Panthers, who opened the season at 40/1 to win the Stanley Cup and were still 20/1 just three weeks ago, are now up to 14/1, according to the Westgate LV Superbook.

While that is a notable boost the Las Vegas book isn’t completely buying in. When it comes to East foes they’re still behind the Capitals at 5/1, the Tampa Bay Lightning at 8/1 and the New York Rangers at 12/1.

If you include West teams they trail the Blackhawks, who lead the way at 9/2, followed by the Kings at 5/1 and the Stars and Ducks at 12/1.
