A common question that is frequently asked when thinking about this team is: What happened to Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos on Superbowl XLVIII? I’ll tell you what happened… they completely got annihilated by the Seattle Seahawks. Even after a record breaking season, Peyton Manning got blown out by the Seahawks defense on a game where no one expected that to happen. The Seahawks defense caught Manning off-guard and retaliated.
This season, according to the odds table, the Denver Broncos are said to be the favorite to winning the Superbowl. Quarterback Peyton Manning and his offense are expected to have a similar season as last year expect without that Superbowl blow. Though, this time Manning will have new faces to target as his offense as the Broncos were making major changes to their roster. For their running game, the Broncos lost Knowshon Moreno to the Miami Dolphins; running back Montee Ball will take on his position as leading rusher. They also lost two players that played a big role in their receiver mix involving Eric Decker and Trindon Holliday; both players were key asset to the Broncos offensive mix, especially Holliday who was important for special teams as a kick returner. Though, they were able to acquire wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders from the Pittsburgh Steelers who is said to be in the 3rd receiver slot; Demaryius Thomas is still set as the leading receiver followed by Wes Welker in that 2nd slot. Don’t also forget about tight end Julius Thomas who had an incredible season and can sometimes catch defenders off guard. All in all, their offense still looks pretty solid although much work must be done with the running game; but then again, with Peyton Manning as your quarterback who needs a rusher!
Their defense was also active during free agency as they lost several big names from that defensive mix; but at the same time acquired a couple that will definitely be helpful for the Broncos lineup. The Broncos were unable to come to an agreement with cornerbacks Champ Bailey and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. Instead they were able to pick up younger, better and faster players; this coming from former New England Patriots cornerback Aqib Talib and safety T.J Ward from the Cleveland Browns. These acquisitions will give the Broncos much better coverage and pace in their defense. In addition, they had to let go of defensive ends Shaun Philips and Robert Ayers. In return, they received defensive end Demarcus Ware from the Dallas Cowboys who will go perfectly in that blitz package with linebacker Von Miller. Although they let go of several key players from their roster, they were able to compensate their losses with even better acquisitions. No wonder their still considered as the favorite to win the Superbowl!
