Villanova wins at Butler, remains sixth in CBS Sports Top 25 (and one)

Villanova improved to 4-0 in the Big East on Sunday with a 60-55 win at Butler that dropped Chris Holtmann’s Bulldogs to 12-4 overall and 1-3 in the Big East.

But I didn’t drop Butler in the Top 25 (and one).

Here’s why: Crazy as it might seem, I don’t like punishing schools for losing close games they’re supposed to lose and/or close games against higher-ranked opponents, and Sunday’s game against a Villanova team ranked sixth in the Top 25 (and one) was a close game against a higher-ranked opponent. So I kept the Bulldogs 10th.

“But they have FOUR losses, Parrish!”

I know that’s what some of you are screaming, and it’s true. Butler does have four losses. And I realize most wouldn’t have Butler ranked where I have Butler ranked. But did you realize the Bulldogs’ four losses are all to schools ahead of them in the Top 25 (and one) — specifically No. 6 Villanova, No. 7 Xavier, No. 8 Providence and No. 9 Miami?

In other words, it’s not like there’s a bad loss on the resume.

And Butler does own wins over a good Purdue team and a good Cincinnati team.

Consequently, I decided I’m OK with Butler being 10th as long as the schools that have beaten Butler are better than 10th, which is the case here. So Butler will remain high in the Top 25 (and one) until Butler takes a loss to somebody low in, or completely out of, these rankings, and I hope that’s cool. Either way, the full Top 25 (and one) is below.
