After a razor-thin decision in their first meeting, Andre Ward and Sergey Kovalev are set to face off once again with both looking to definitely prove they are the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world. The first bout went to Ward who won 114-113 across all three judges scorecards despite suffering an early knockdown.
Ward opens the rematch as a -155 favorite with Kovalev coming back at +125. The first bout opened as a pick’em before money pushed Ward to healthy favorite just before the bell.
The first fight was a war that lived up to the billing, something that rarely takes place in the world of boxing nowadays. Ward had no answer for Kovalev early on, as the Russian dominated the first two rounds and put Ward on the canvas for just the second time in his career. As the fight wore on, Ward started to find his groove and was able to take some of the pop out of Kovalev’s hands with his body shots.
No matter who you think won the first fight, it was an instant classic that showed just how great the sport of boxing can be when we see the best fight one another. The rematch will take place at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas for the WBA, IBF and WBO light heavyweight titles on June 17.
