Florida State really needed a win against Duke to stop the bleeding for their NCAA Tournament hopes. They had lost four in a row, and their resume is lacking a second significant win to hang their hat on beyond a victory over Virginia.
Unfortunately for the Seminoles, they fell to 16-12 with an 80-65 loss. Grayson Allen led the way with 18 points, and Marshall Plumlee notched his sixth double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Potential top pick in the draft Brandon Ingram scored 16 points and ultimately got the best of his matchup on the wing with Florida State’s two potential first-round picks Malik Beasley and Dwayne Bacon despite Beasley’s massive throwdown in the first half on bigger Ingram.
The win will keep the momentum going for Duke, but the loss is pretty rough for Leonard Hamilton’s group. It assures them of a losing season in the ACC, and puts them really behind the eight-ball. The Seminoles will likely need to win both of their games against Notre Dame and Syracuse to finish the season, and then also win a couple of games in the ACC Tournament to put them back in mix. That would get them to 20 wins, and would give them a chance to look pretty good to the committee.
But that’s easier said than done. Given their recent run of five losses in a row, it’s tough for Florida State fans to really feel good about where the team is. For now, they can take solace in that massive Beasley dunk over what could be a future NBA star.
