West Virginia’s Daxter Miles Jr. on UK: ‘Tomorrow they’re gonna be 36-1’

West Virginia freshman Daxter Miles Jr. has been playing great in March, averaging just over 12 points per game in WVU’s last five contests, and now he can add “NCAA tournament smack talk” to the long list of skills he bring to this Mountaineers’ team.

We love the NCAA tournament for its increased access to the players, particularly in the days surrounding the pressure-packed games. It’s great when players like Miles make guarantees or jaw a little, but this one will be hard to back up on the court and I don’t think the Wildcats need any bulletin board material.

What we do expect is for West Virginia to play a lot of physical defense with little concern for fouls. The Mountaineers foul more (23.3 personal fouls per game) than any of the other 351 Division I teams, and forcing the NBA-bound Wildcats out of their comfort zone is not a terrible idea. Bob Huggins obviously has WVU in a mind set of being unintimidated by the opponent, so look for a feisty showing from the Mountaineers on Thursday night.

Daxter Miles guaranteed a win against Kentucky. (USATSI)
