WGC-Mexico Championship Odds & Betting Preview

[ad_1]

The first World Golf Championships event of the 2016-17 PGA Tour season takes place this weekend when the best players in the world travel south of the border for the WGC-Mexico in Naucalpan.

The small field consists of players from the top of the Official World Golf Ranking and the money lists/orders of merit from the six main professional golf tours. This is the 18th time the WGC Championship has been played, and the course (Club de Golf Chapultepec) is especially unique since it’s at 7,870 ft above sea level.

Dustin Johnson is the +650 favorite to earn the hardware at Bovada, with Jordan Spieth (+800), Rory McIlroy (+1100), Hideki Matsuyama (+1200), Henrik Stenson (+1400), Rickie Fowler (+1800), Adam Scott (+2200), Justin Rose (+2200), Sergio Garcia (+2800) and Jon Rahm (+3000) comprising the top 10.

The most noticeable absence is world No. 2 Jason Day. On February 26 Day announced he planned on withdrawing from the event because of the flu and ear infections. The Aussie ranks 79th in FedExCup standings with one top-10 and a fifth-place finish in four starts this year.

McIlroy’s return will likely be the biggest storyline this weekend. The Northern Irishman’s last competitive round was at the South African Open in January, when he finished second behind only Graeme Storm. McIlroy revealed shortly after that he had suffered a rib injury while testing new clubs, but he appears to be healed now in the wake of his highly publicized game with United States President Donald Trump.

Speaking of Trump, he’s the sole reason the WGC has shifted the tournament to Mexico. The first WGC showing of the season – which is usually referred to as the WGC-Cadillac Championship – has been played at Trump’s Blue Monster at Doral, but the PGA Tour announced a year ago that it would not host tournaments at any course owned by him due to his consistent criticism of Mexican immigrants.

Mexico is far from a golfing hotbed, so it’s going to be interesting to the turnout. Regardless of what transpires, the WGC will not be returning to Doral any time soon.
