For better or for worse, Tony Romo has long been the face of the franchise for the Dallas Cowboys, but those days are in the rear-view mirror now.
Romo’s preseason injury paved the way for rookie quarterback Dak Prescott to grab the starting job, and the Mississippi State product quickly established himself as the starter. Prescott had a fantastic rookie season in Big D, finishing the 2016 campaign with 3,667 yards, 23 touchdowns and only four interceptions while guiding the Cowboys all the way to the divisional round.
Give full credit to Romo, though. The veteran signal-caller read a statement to the media in mid-November regarding his situation, saying he understood the team’s decision to keep rolling with Prescott. In all likelihood, Romo has taken his last snap in Dallas.
Romo is 36 and injury-prone, but there are far worse quarterbacks starting for NFL teams. So, where will No. 9 be suiting up next season? Oddsmakers at BetOnline think he’s destined for the Mile High City.
The shop is offering odds on which NFL roster Romo will be on for the first game of the 2017 campaign, with Denver the front-runner at +165. Houston (+400), Buffalo (+400) Chicago (+600), Kansas City (+600), Dallas (+700) and the New York Jets (+1000) are the other possibilities, according to the shop.
Chicago, New York and Houston look like Romo’s likeliest landing spots to me. Chicago’s intentions to move on from the maligned Jay Cutler are well known, and the team has no other viable option at the quarterback position. The Bears aren’t going to contend for a Super Bowl any time soon, but they could easily pursue the experienced Romo to fill the void.
