The Golden State Warriors joined some elite company when they beat the Toronto Raptors to bring their record to 12-0. Golden State is the first team in over a decade to start perfect after 12 games. The last team to accomplish the feat was the 2002-03 Mavericks, who actually started 14-0. The only other teams to start 12-0 since the 1993-94 season were the 1996-97 Bulls and the 1993-94 Rockets.
Going undefeated this far into a season obviously gives a team a great head start towards locking up the #1 conference seed, but how have the previous teams who started 12-0 fared in the playoffs? Well, to be blunt, pretty damn good.
Of the three previous teams to start 12-0, only the 2002-03 Mavericks didn’t win the NBA Finals. The Mavs could have very well won it all that season had they not lost Dirk Nowitzki for the playoffs in Game 3 of the West Finals due to an injury.
Golden State is the clear favorite in the latest futures rankings at online sportsbook Bodog. They’re currently listed at +200 to win the NBA Championship and +125 to win the Western Conference. Lots of things will need to go their way for the Warriors to win back-to-back Finals, not the least of which is staying healthy, but with talent, recent experience and history all on their side, they appear to be well on their way.
