MLB Picks and Parlays: Yankees and Orioles Meet in Baltimore
The New York Yankees look like they’re heating up as we come to the last month of the season. They took three of four from the Red Sox on the weekend, punctuated by a 9-2 win on Sunday where they hit Boston ace- Chris Sale hard. And they followed it up with a 7-4 win on the road to start a three-game series with Baltimore.
New York spotted Baltimore a 3-0 lead after two innings, but the bats came alive in the middle innings as they scored seven straight between the fourth and sixth.
Didi Gregorious got things started with a two-run shot in the fourth. Jacoby Ellsbury continued his recent hot string by singling in the tying run. Starlin Castro put the Yankees in front to stay with a two-run homer in the fifth for the 5-3 lead. He and Brett Gardner added RBIs in the sixth to finish up the Yankees scoring.
The bullpen did their job, allowing one run and one hit in the final 4.1 innings.
Baltimore Orioles finds themselves two games out of the final wildcard spot after the loss. They had a seven-game winning streak heading into the weekend, but could only manage a split of their four-game set with the Blue Jays. The streak included sweeps over the Mariners and Red Sox to help breath hope into their playoff aspirations.
The offense has helped fuel the wins as they scored 72 runs in their last 12 games or 6 RPG.
The Yankees offense went cold for about a month, but they also seem to be getting their mojo back. They’ve scored 28 runs in their last five games.
CC Sabathia (11-5, 3.71 ERA) has been on a roll for three straight starts, with two against the Red Sox and one against the Mariners. He’s allowed just four runs in 20 innings for a 1.80 ERA. New York has won two of those three starts.
Jeremy Hellickson (8-8, 5.15 ERA) was the Orioles big July 31 trade deadline acquisition. Things haven’t gone as planned. (2-3, 6.55 ERA) in six starts, but it may have given a moral boost to the rest of the team to see management make an addition when most were expecting them to be sellers. He gave up seven runs in 4.2 innings of an 11-8 loss to Toronto last time out.
