One of the most popular upset picks in the bracket lies in the middle of the South region, its game out in Portland and to be played Thursday night on truTV around 10 p.m. ET.
It’s No. 4 Georgetown vs. No. 13 Eastern Washington. The Hoyas are 2-5 in their last five NCAA Tournaments, dating back to 2008, and have lost every single time since to a double-digit seed.
Eastern Washington won at Indiana this season, has the No. 1 scorer in the country in Tyler Harvey and gets this Round of 64 game just over two hours away from its campus.
And Wednesday afternoon, EWU coach Jim Hayford agreed to only one radio interview request: CBS Sports Radio’s “Jim Rome Show.” As the interview came to a close, Hayford went off script and, unprompted, confidently said, “We’re gonna win and talk again, Jim.”
Go ahead and listen to the byte.
Eastern Washington coach: “We’re gonna win.”
Hayford is embracing being the underdog with having a favorite’s mindset.
“We’re not just happy to be here,” Hayford said to Rome. “We want to go do something special. My team in November won at Indiana and snapped the nation’s longest non-conference home winning streak at Assembly hall. We’re capable. if you’re still in a pool you can fill it in, you want to put the Eagles in. We play fast. We’re the third-leading scoring team in the country. We have the country’s leading scorer in Tyler Harvey.”
A really good interview from a very confident coach. Now I absolutely can’t wait to watch this game. For full context of the quote, head over to the 7:20 mark.
