UNC Favored In ACC Tourney, But Plenty Of Danger

It has not been a perfect season in Chapel Hill, but the North Carolina Tar Heels still find themselves as favorites to win the ACC tournament. UNC has a veteran team that has excelled in every facet of the game, which includes leading the nation in rebounds per game and assists per game.

Justin Jackson has asserted himself as the key player for UNC, as the junior is averaging 18.3 points and has scored at least 20 points on 16 occasions. However, Jackson isn’t the only piece, with UNC 8-2 in games in which Jackson scored 13 or fewer points. The key player to this team may be Theo Pinson, who has proven to be the ultimate glue guy.

It’s not an easy path to the conference championship, with Duke, Louisville, Virginia, Notre Dame and even Florida State having a legit chance to be the last team remaining. Of all those teams, it will be important to watch Duke, which has been incredibly streaky all season long. When the Blue Devils are on, they are one of the best teams in the nation. When they are off, they find new ways to lose games.

To the surprise of nobody, Duke is the favorite to win the ACC this upcoming college basketball season. The bulk of the Blue Devils’ roster consists of recruits who were at the top of their class and combo guard Grayson Allen is the preseason favorite to win player of the year.

Aside from the known commodities of Allen, Matt Jones, Luke Kennard and Amile Jefferson, Duke brought in two freshmen with the potential to go first in the upcoming NBA draft. Jayson Tatum is a long small forward who loves to drive into the paint and thrives at creating contact. If he can bulk up and fix a few hiccups in his shooting, he will be the top-scoring freshman in the country.

Harry Giles is a fantastic athlete with a great build, but a third knee surgery by the age of 18 is concerning. If he can come into the Duke lineup and play with athleticism and burst, he will be a major factor for the Blue Devils come the tournament.

Although UNC won its first ACC title since 2008 last season, the Tar Heels enter this season with many sleeping on them. True, they don’t have any flashy names on the roster, but six upperclassmen with plenty of experience and a few key recruits make the Tar Heels dangerous.
